Here's a list of places you can visit in Catania for FREE

Imagine you have just arrived in Catania and want to feel the vibe of the City, go for a walk around and discover places. We made for you a list of places you can visit for free.

1. Piazza Duomo, Liotru and Saint Agatha Cathedral

This is the definitely the most famous square in Catania. In here you can find:

-"U liotru": the obelisk with the elephant, symbol of Catania

-The Cathedral of Saint Agatha

-Porta Uzeda: One of the old gates of the City of Catania

It's a very stunning square, with many Renaissance decorated buildings, cafes and restaurants.

Underneath the Cathedral there are Achillian Baths, underground thermal structures dating back to the IV-V century (there is a small entry fee for those).

2. "A Piscaria", the old Fish Market

Said to be the best fish market in Sicily, it's easy to see why people are so in love with it. It is really authentic, unchanged for many decades. Walking through it you'll hear the vendors singing and talking to attract buyers, and it's the best place to buy any kind of fresh fish, vegetables and typical products. If you'd like some street food, this is the place to go!

If you access the market from Piazza Duomo, you'll pass near the Amenano fountain, where the underground river flows.

3. Piazza Bellini and the Theatre

A stunning round square where you can admire the Bellini Theatre, a masterpiece of Sicilian Architecture. While getting inside the theatre has a fee, the square and its architecture is free to admire.

4. Via dei Crociferi

Via Crociferi is one of the oldest streets in Catania, home to many beautiful historical palaces and churches of Baroque Architecture.

It is considered one of the most beautiful streets in Italy, and it's famous for the legend of a headless horse, but we leave that story for another time.

Definitely a must visit for Catania.

5. Villa Bellini

Villa Bellini is a park located in Via Etnea, within walking distance to the historical centre. It's a place where to take a break from the busy city, where to enjoy a walk in nature and under the shade of many trees. It's ideal to have a picnic, enjoy a packed lunch or a relaxing walk. From the top you have a good view of the volcano Etna.

6. "Fera o luni" the local market

The local market, called "A fera o luni" (the Monday's market) is an immense market where you can find pretty much anything: there are local and exotic fruit and vegetables, food, typical products, souvenirs, new and second-hand clothes, household items, electronic and everything in between. It can be a bit chaotic at times, but that adds to the charm of it.

7. The Roman Amphitheatre

Did you know in Catania there is a city underneath the city? After the Eruption of Etna in 1669, majority of the city was covered by lava. In Piazza Stesicoro you can admire a piece of the massive Black Colosseum (the second largest after its Roman twin), that was covered by lava. Walking around the square you can see the parts that were not covered, and be amazed when you find out how big it really was!

8. Black beach in San Giovani Li Cuti

In San Giovanni Li Cuti, around 2km from the historical centre, there is a black sand beach, of volcanic origin.  In summer the black beach of San Giovanni Li Cuti is equipped with a whole range of services: dressing rooms, bathrooms, showers, steps and walkways, and around there are bautiful little restaurants and beach club to enjoy local food.

9. Trek Mountain Etna!

This is a must do if you're visiting Catania! We included in the Free things to do because besides from getting the bus to get there (less than 10 euros), there is no entrance fee on Etna and you can trek and enjoy for as long as you want!
